Or is it literally as if someone else is saying something- heard outside of the mind then to be processed [is it heard inside the mind just a voice- and if so it would need to be a voice that has been heard before right? Can the mind distort voices and meld into a new voice?]. If the auditory hallucinations differ from patient to patient what are the percentages of heard outside the mind vs. inside the mind? [if known].

If anyone has any pieces to answer the abundance of questions here it would be greatly appreciated- cut and paste of info works tooAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07619246873135869693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6146376483374589779.post-58300347977107054132013-03-22T15:05:02.835-07:002013-03-22T15:05:02.835-07:00There is definitely so many people that deal with ...There is definitely so many people that deal with this. There are some studies (including one by my group) showing electrophysiological differences in how the brains of people with synaesthesia process very basic visual or auditory stimuli. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18723094; http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17573375). As far as I know, these have not been correlated with reported differences in perception, however. They do suggest that whatever is happening in synaesthesia is more widespread than the cross-activation phenomenology would suggest. This isn't just an academic question, as I'm a synaesthete who has taken a battery of auditory testing and apparently I've got auditory processing at the bottom of the normal range, which is at odds with generally high to exceptional ability in most cognitive skills, and can't be accounted for by any hearing issues, as my hearing has also been tested and it's normal. I generally feel that I'm at a disadvantage in decoding speech in anything but perfect conditions, and I recall having such issues as a child.
Lili Marlenehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09303890038396510279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6146376483374589779.post-49272106637507226392011-11-18T02:53:47.122-08:002011-11-18T02:53:47.122-08:00http://adf.ly/3jgTG

One wonders, did any of the 'hallucinations' take the form of 'playing with words'?

I heard from one person who's voices insisted that cycling through different vowel sounds within a particular syllable or word could reveal clues about prehistoric language development, and also that to reverse a sound may produce an opposite.

Eg, 'came' and 'make' or 'game' and 'mage'. Certainly, a 'Pag' can be used to remedy a 'Gap'.

Vowel cycling: Bag, Bog, Bug, Big, Beg, etc.

Did the neural networks do any of this stuff? There are lots of examples but I'm sure you get the gist.LokaSamastahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00187465138890222167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6146376483374589779.post-6644732915384015892011-07-29T04:06:44.116-07:002011-07-29T04:06:44.116-07:00Thanks for your comment David. The detailed predictions may or may not be correct but the general principle is certainly interesting. It at least illustrates an approach to get beyond psychological explanations to consider hallucinations, delusion or other psychiatric symptoms as the output of malfunctioning networks of neurons.Kevin Mitchellhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07172255754953214162noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6146376483374589779.post-14151344419353453102011-07-28T22:53:09.006-07:002011-07-28T22:53:09.006-07:00This reminds me of when I was about 10 years old a...This reminds me of when I was about 10 years old and I discovered that if I plugged my headphones into the microphone jack I could make a recording. Microphones and speakers were exact opposites in my young mind. Accidentally discovering that, mechanically, they were very similar, was an astounding discovery.

Intriguing article, thank you for it.davidbitterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12073145021340038657noreply@blogger.com
